Compassionate Inquiry is a therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Gabor Maté. It integrates elements of mindfulness, compassion, and curiosity to help individuals uncover and understand the deep-rooted emotional pain and beliefs that shape their behaviors and experiences. This method focuses on creating a safe, non-judgmental space in which clients feel seen, heard, and understood. Rather than merely addressing symptoms, Compassionate Inquiry seeks to identify the underlying causes of suffering, often rooted in trauma, childhood experiences, and unmet needs.
In a Compassionate Inquiry session, the therapist gently guides the client to observe their thoughts, emotions, and body sensations in the present moment, allowing them to access hidden memories and subconscious patterns. This awareness helps clients develop insight into how past events shape their present, empowering them to release limiting beliefs and move toward healing.
The approach emphasizes attunement between therapist and client, where the therapist uses deep listening, empathy, and open-ended questions to evoke the client’s own inner wisdom. Compassionate Inquiry is often used in trauma therapy, addiction recovery, and work with chronic health conditions, aiming to support individuals in becoming more conscious of their emotional world and fostering self-compassion as a key to transformation.

I have been working with Mariko since February of 2023. Dealing with issues ranging from depression to anxiety. At first I was somewhat skeptical. Having been down this road with other therapists, and not finding too many solutions.
